Math Proficiency Test
New Certification Requirement: Mathematics Proficiency Test
On May 30, 2024, the Government of Ontario announced that the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) will be reinstated as a certification requirement for teachers in Ontario as of February 1, 2025.
Applicants who submit a complete application to the Ontario College of Teachers (the College) for a general Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) on or after February 1, 2025, must successfully pass the MPT. This applies whether or not the application was started before February 1, 2025.
An application is only considered complete when the College receives all required documentation, including proof of completion of an initial teacher education program, to the satisfaction of the Registrar.

About The MPT
There is no cost to take the MPT, and all individuals can take the test as many times as needed to pass.
The MPT is developed, facilitated, and evaluated by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).
EQAO will open registration at mathproficiencytest.ca by September 9, 2024. Test sittings are scheduled to begin in October 2024. Please visit the mathproficiencytest.ca for the latest information on test registration and sittings.
Ontario Applicants
Ontario applicants who submit a complete application to the College for a general Certificate of Qualification and Registration (CQR) on or after February 1, 2025, must successfully pass the MPT. This applies whether or not the application was started before February 1, 2025.
Ontario applicants who submit a complete application to the College for a general CQR before February 1, 2025, will not be required to successfully pass the MPT.
Applicants who are entitled to receive a certificate based on satisfying requirements to become teachers of an Indigenous language (Native Languages) are exempt from test requirements.
Applicants for a Transitional Certificate or a Multi-Session Transitional Certificate
Applicants are not required to pass the MPT to be eligible for a Transitional Certificate (TCQR) or a Multi-Session Transitional Certificate (MTCQR). However, they may be required to complete the MPT depending on the date they convert their certificate to a general CQR.
Ontario applicants who are granted a TCQR or MTCQR and convert it to a general CQR before February 1, 2025, are not required to complete the MPT.
Ontario applicants who are granted a TCQR or MTCQR and do not convert it to a general CQR before February 1, 2025, will be required to successfully pass the MPT and complete their teacher education program to convert.
Ontario Certified Teachers who hold a Transitional Certificate or Multi-Session Transitional Certificate
Ontario Certified Teachers (OCTs) who hold a TCQR or an MTCQR are not required to successfully pass the MPT if they convert their certificate to a general CQR before February 1, 2025.
OCTs who do not convert their TCQR or MTCQR before February 1, 2025, will be required to successfully pass the MPT and complete their teacher education program before they can convert their certificate.
Internationally Educated Teacher (IET) Applicants
Internationally Educated Teachers (IETs) are individuals who are certified by a teacher regulatory authority outside of Canada.
IET applicants who submit a complete application to the College for a general CQR on or after February 1, 2025, must successfully pass the MPT within two years of being granted their initial certification by the College or their certificate will expire. This applies whether or not the application was started before February 1, 2025.
Ontario Labour Mobility Applicants
Teachers who are certified in another Canadian province or territory and are applying under the Ontario Labour Mobility Act (OLMA) are not required to pass the MPT.

Do OCTs have to pass the MPT?
Any Ontario Certified Teacher who holds a general Certificate of Qualification and Registration on February 1, 2025, will not be required to pass the MPT.
Why is the MPT a certification requirement?
The MPT certification requirement was legislated by the Government of Ontario. Any questions about this requirement should be directed to the Ministry of Education.
Is there a cost to take the MPT?
There is no cost for writing the test, including for repeated attempts. You can attempt the test as many times as required.
How do I register to take the MPT?
The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) will open MPT registration at mathproficiencytest.ca by September 9, 2024. The first sittings are expected to take place in October 2024.
The College does not have a role in MPT registration or scheduling. For more information, please contact EQAO.
Who evaluates the MPT?
EQAO is responsible for evaluating the MPT and reporting results to the College when an individual has successfully passed the MPT. That report does not include information related to the number of attempts the individual required nor the scores they achieved.
