Council Meeting Summary
During its March 21 meeting, College Council:
- received a report from the Standards of Practice and Education Committee which highlights the development of a new Professional Advisory on combatting hate and intolerance, and approved the committee’s motion to have the Minister of Education enacts a new Additional Qualification titled, Holocaust Education and Countering Antisemitism / Éducation à l’Holocauste et lutte contre l’antisémitisme in Schedule D of the Teachers’ Qualifications Regulation
- received a quarterly report from the Chair of Council
- received a quarterly report from the Registrar & CEO
- received a quarterly financial report for the period ending on December 31, 2022
- welcomed the Hon. Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, who applauded the College’s work to create a new governance structure; acknowledged the College’s ongoing support for initiatives that promote diversity and student safety, including the successful implementation of the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program and its high compliance rate; recognized improvements in certification timelines and urged continued improvements amidst an “acute” teacher shortage
- approved a recommendation that College staff revise the Public Presentations at Council Meetings policy to create a renewed approach to public engagement with Council
- received a report from the Audit and Finance Subcommittee and approved the following motions:
- That Council approve a contribution to the restricted cash reserve representing the 2022 year-end surplus.
- That Council approve an amendment to Financial Objective #5 by deletion and substitution as outlined in Document GC20230321-12, Attachment 1.
- That Council accept the December 31, 2022 audited financial statements of the Ontario College of Teachers as presented.
- received a report from the Selection and Nominating Subcommittee and approved the subcommittee’s recommendation for an appointment to the Accreditation Committee for a two-year term starting March 21, 2023
- received an annual report from the Investigation Committee
- received a notice of motion to amend sections 4.07, 14.02, 16.04 and 27 of the College bylaws to be considered at the next Council meeting
- received various correspondence
- moved to an in-camera training session.
