College of Teachers Names Chair, Vice-Chair

December 12 2006

Dec. 12, 2006 (Toronto) — The Council of the Ontario College of Teachers has elected teachers Don Cattani and Annilee Jarvis as Chair and Vice-Chair.

Cattani, a teacher with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, fills the full-time post as Chair of the newly-reformed, 37-member Council of the teaching profession's licensing body.

Jarvis, a Special Education teacher with the York Region District School Board, assumes the Vice-Chair role in her first term since being elected to Council in October.

"It's an honour to represent teachers and to uphold the standards for teacher professionalism in Ontario," Cattani said. "I believe strongly that the time is right to reach out to our partners in education and to establish strong relationships based on a mutual respect of our mandates."

Both Cattani and Jarvis are long-serving teaching professionals. Since the early 1970s, Cattani has taught English, religion, mathematics, history, law and alternative education to Grade 7 to OAC (formerly Grade 13) students. He served as president of the Thunder Bay Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association, Secondary, from 1995 to 2006. He was first elected to the College Council in 2003 and has served on its Discipline and Executive committees, and as Chair of the Fitness to Practise Committee. He has a BA and a BEd from Lakehead University.

Annilee Jarvis is a Special Education teacher who participates in York Region board and teacher-driven initiatives for math, literacy and Special Education. She has served the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario in York Region as a member of the negotiating team, the collective bargaining committee and the human rights committee, and as chair of Steward and Professional Development. She has an Honours BA from McMaster University and a BEd from the University of Toronto.

Don Cattani's and Annilee Jarvis's teaching qualifications are listed on the College web site along with those of all other certified Ontario teachers at Find a Teacher. Cattani's registration number is 264427. Jarvis's registration number is 169181.

The Ontario College of Teachers licenses, governs and regulates the profession of teaching in the public interest. It sets standards of practice and ethical standards, conducts disciplinary hearings and accredits teacher education programs affecting its 200,000 members in publicly funded schools and institutions across Ontario. The College is the largest self-regulatory body in Canada.
